Essential Oils for Beating the Blues

What if I told you, you don’t have to continue feeling this way.  There is a way out.

 

 

First off I want to clarify that there is a difference between feeling down and clinical depression.  If you feel yourself sinking into thoughts of suicide, or the depression does not go away, seek help.  Reach out to friends or family or call your local suicide hotline.  Don’t wait, get the help you need.   Your primary care doctor is a good place to start.

My story: For years I followed my doctor’s orders and took every pill she prescribed.  The frustrating part, not only was I spending $400 a month for doctor visits and medication, but the medication didn’t even work.  I never got relief from the depression.  (Please hear me, I’m not saying you should stop taking your prescriptions.  If your medication is working for you, that’s awesome, please continue using it.) 

During my 3 year quest to find the most tolerable pill, I must have tried 15 different medications and combos.  The side effects were horrendous. Everything from tremors, to speech difficulties, brain fog, hair loss and even hallucinations.  They took my problems with depression to a whole new level!

I just wanted to feel better and was tired of being treated like a guinea pig.  My mom told me about essential oils and after lots of research, I decided to give it a try.  Knowing that this was a big decision, I wanted to be certain I was being safe, so I discussed my plan with my doctor, and we worked up a schedule for me to wean myself off the medication.

It was the best decision I made.  I still experience ups and downs, but they are now in the normal range.  My mind feels free from the fog created from the pills.  It took a couple years, but my hands stopped shaking, and my hair is back to being thick and healthy.

Scientist are discovering the benefits of essential oils.  A group of scientists published their findings in June 2015, on a study performed in Mexico City, on the effects of linalool and beta-pinene on the monoaminergic system on the brain.  The monoaminergic system includes the adrenaline/noradrenaline adrenergic system and the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.  What they discovered was that linalool and beta-pinene produce an antidepressant-like effect.

You may be wondering what the heck is linalool and beta-pinene and how you can get your hands on some.  Linalool is a natural substance found in Lavender and Clary Sage.  Beta-pinene is a natural substance found in Lemon, Lime, and White Fir.

When choosing essential oils, it is important to be picking about which brand you use.  Only use essential oils that are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG).  There are many products claiming to be pure essential oils.  However, many of these products are not CPTG essential oils.  Instead they use fragrant synthetic chemical substitutes to dilute or replace the more expensive essential oil extracts.  Don’t waste your money on products that aren’t effective.

 

*Make sure to read the usage method and precautions for each oil.  Use special caution when using on children, during pregnancy, or for those with health problems.
